Spaghetti Sauce Jar Moroccan Lanterns
I don't know about you guys, but from where I'm sitting (Minnesota) the snow is getting really old. Like not even pretty any more. Sort of a cadaver/concrete color. I need some summer, some heat, some beer. Like an Anthony Bourdain special where it's late at night and everybody's outside and sweaty and eating some sort of rolled up meat chopped cilantro spicy pepper street food from a vendor's cart and drinking cold beer. That's what I need.
So I got some spaghetti sauce jars.
And added gold dimensional paint. Just blooped it on with the tip of the applicator bottle.
Or you can make little dots, which looks sort like weird little nails. I think I like the dots the best.
And then poured some glass paint into the bottom of the jar. I used Delta glass paint. I mixed blue and yellow for this pear color. Mixed it around in the bottom of the jar, then dragged it up the sides with a soft brush.
Here's my color inspiration. My best friend and I went to Barcelona in college and when we were in the Picasso Museum, she sneakily bought me these postcards and gave them to me for my birthday. I still love them so much. Look at those colors! And those pigeons!
And so now I can fantasize about summer nights, about putting these lanterns on my white metal table on the deck, Jon can barbecue, the kids can chase fireflies, aaaaahhhhh. I can't wait!

very very wonderful........
ReplyDeletewow what a great idea!! thanks for sharing it :)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!
ReplyDeleteOriginal, lovely, useful.
Did I mention brilliant?
Beautiful and ingenious as usual! But what I want to know is, how did you get the pattern to be regular? Me, I would make my scalloped pattern, think I've got the spacing even all around the bottle and then realize that the end of the pattern meets the beginning of the pattern in a Very Bad Manner.
ReplyDeleteAnd ahhhhhh, I am with you on the cadaver snow. Never mind, this weekend is supposed to be a foretaste of the next few weeks, fingers crossed. Hang in there!
Katie, those are going to look wonderful on your patio this summer. Looking at them, I had a thought....How about making them hanging lanterns? They would look beautiful hanging from the ceiling.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea. Have a lot of gold Dresdin trim and might try decoupage then paint to speed up the process. Great for a summer lawn party.
ReplyDeleteThese look so realistic! Neat idea!
ReplyDeletefabulous!
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking! I can't believe what an incredible transformation you were able to achieve with upcycled jars and gold dimensional paint! Wow!

@ LiEr: I asume you would start by marking a point with a single dot. Then mark a dot exacly at the oposide side of the jar. Then mark the points in between. Use these points as guideline for your pattern.
ReplyDeleteThe way your brain works--the crafts it comes up--dimensional paint + spaghetti jars = moroccan lanterns? Who else but you would come up with this and it would end up looking this good? You blow my mind, Katie.
ReplyDeleteI love these jars!!! They will make the most perfect lanterns!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome.
ReplyDeletelove these, katie! so so pretty :)
ReplyDeleteSo different and pretty
ReplyDeleteWow these are amazing thanks for sharing I am in awe
ReplyDeleteWhat an Awesome idea!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteOoh! Grat idea! Now I only need to know where find this kind of paint in Spain. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteHow fun is that? I love the jewel colors.
ReplyDeleteThis is ingenious. Must link up.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteOk, do you turn them upside down over the candle or try to get the candle down in there...just askin!
ReplyDeleteI just made some with the kids and we had a blast! Just wish I had more jars...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!!!!!!!!! This is an awesome and totally unique idea. I wouldn't mind doing a couple of these for candles/table decoration during summer nights in the backyard!
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful idea. I will definitely be trying my hand at it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
These are FANTASTIC!!! I am going to share it on my blog... I love to decorate glass jars as well, but I have always used masking tape and spray paint...your idea brings it to a whole new level. One of the things I do with my jars is wrap old rustic wire around the lip so I can hang them. :) just a thought!
ReplyDeleteThis is GENIUS!!!
ReplyDeleteClever you and something that I'm definitely going to replicate.
xx Felicity
WOW Totally amazing!!!!! Love it!!! I am SO going to make these.
ReplyDeleteOk, I absolutely LOVE this idea!!! I will definitely copy your lovely idea and make me tons and tons (ok, maybe not that many, but a fair amount, at least one of each wonderful color I can come up with :)) of them for myself and sprinkle them around the house. I already have one jar hanging that will be the first volunteer :) THANK YOU for sharing this, I love it!
ReplyDeleteI really love this idea! I am doing a feature of it this morning!

Hi,
ReplyDeleteWonderful!!!
Kisses
I have a blue million of these jars, now I know what to do with them! I suspect they'll be hung across the front of the covered porch; I should wait 'till nesting season is nearly over so the $^&%^#$^ birds don't make nests in 'em!
ReplyDeleteI am excited for two reasons now. Firstly, I saw this over on Design Sponge and didn't even realise it was you I read it and squealed so fast (and promptly forwarded the link to my sisters). Secondly, I didn't realise you lived in Minnesota too! Well, I didn't until a few months ago but here we are. Australians coming to the end of their first Minnesotan winter.... let's just say we are very much looking forward to Spring!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, those are gorgeous! And in my favorite colors too. I love that gold paint, I've never seen dimensional paint before.
ReplyDeleteI can just picture all these colorful jars filled with great craft supplies.
brilliant - we are always looking for ideas for the school auction and these would make awesome centerpieces!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love Moroccan accessories. Great idea and so easy to make.
ReplyDeleteLOVE!!!
ReplyDeletewow these are GORGEOUS! I can totally see myself making them - I have a habit of saving my spaghetti jars anyway. PINNING this!!
ReplyDeleteNow I know why I save jars, thank you!
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess I can't go to the Morrocos to get some beautiful jars, so only following the instructions I can make some myself...
ReplyDeleteHow clever of you!!!! Brilliant indeed!!!! Thanks!!!
Blessings,
Nádya
Found this on Pinterest and now I MUST DO IT!!! These are totally awesome!
ReplyDeleteMust make some!

I'm curious how the gold paint and the glass paint have held up to the heat of the candle flame?
ReplyDeleteVery cool. Very craft. Very clever!
ReplyDeletei LOVE these jars! super groovy!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo genius, can't wait to try!
ReplyDeleteIngenius! I love these Morrocan lamps! Come visit me and craft with me! I will make you tea and feed you dim sum!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone made these, then left them outside (accidentally perhaps) for them to be rained upon? Storms come up very quickly on the coast of South Carolina, and sometimes we just have to make a run for it with the food and the small children, lol!! Just wondering how they've held up?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love Moroccan style and these look great.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! I have written about you and your beautiful laterns on my blog today, hope you dont mind ♥ (I linked back to this post) *♥*
ReplyDeleteI did these awhile ago and just posted them on my blog shadesofglitter.blogspot. Idea credit to you of course! Absolutely love your blog. You are my inspiration!
ReplyDeletethese are fabulous!!!!
ReplyDeleteI highlighted this beautiful craft on my little blog at http://wadelmat.blogspot.com/ Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing... My plan is to paint outside first, then do the gold bit. THEN, do my exotic polymer clay lids annd actually keep things in these jars
ReplyDeleteHi There!
ReplyDeleteQuick question...I'm assuming the glass paint is safe for burning candles inside the jars?
I love them!
really nice, I got some cheap solar lights took them apart and put them in ball jars for solar lights outside, if you sprayed these will varnish and put the solar lights in them you could put these outside.
ReplyDeleteSuch a brilliant idea!!! Luv luv luv this :)
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the paint from ? I tried to look for Delta Pain , but only found the crsytal glass enamels paint ...
ReplyDeleteI loooove these!!! I have been collecting jars of all sizes to play with this idea! And From reading through the comments found other great ideas I'm going to use incorporate into my own jars... I'm going to use glass baby food jars and a huge pickle jar too in addition to like 6 regular spagetti jars!! Also taking the spray paint idea from one lady who commented and using that on a couple jars and also going to use the hanging idea from a couple other ladies on here!! Also I think if anyone is worried about the heat from The candles can always use the little battery-operated Tealight that's my plan
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to find some creative lighting to hang from the trees for mood lighting. These would be perfect with tea lites in them. A little wire around the rim and yay mood lighting. Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeletespectacular.
ReplyDeleteIsn't the interior paint toxic to heat......? And it seems like it would be far easier to paint inside prior to the outside. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for doing this and sharing it. I've been itching to get lanterns in a Moroccan-style but where I'm from it's so expensive! These are perfect! So thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much or sharing this! I have been looking into getting moroccan style lanterns! Can you tell me where I might be able to find more ideas like this to make mine own! Thanks again for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYour jars came out beautiful. Great for recycling jars. Thank you for sharing.

Those are beautiful!!! Wow..
ReplyDeleteWOW! Love this idea! What a great way to re-use those jars and not just toss them in the trash! Great idea for outside candles especially since summer is around the corner!
ReplyDeleteWow this is great. I have to try this. The moroccan style lanterns turned out really great. Awesome job man.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!! What a lovely idea!!!x
ReplyDeleteThe jars are beautiful! And to think, it all started with wanting a beer (emphasis on beer) and warm weather.
ReplyDeleteI love them they are awesome I would love to have a go to make.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing idea. I can't wait to use it. I have been into Morrocan food ideas and design lately, I don't know why. Now you've really piqued my interest.
ReplyDeleteThese are absolutely fantastic I don't know when last I've seen a dyi looking so realistic, I will definitely give these a whirl.A must try.
ReplyDeleteto make the pattern match start and finish, wrap a piece of paper around the jar, cut it to fit. Lay it flat. Draw on the paper, Wrap the drawing around the jar, Match the repeats of paint to the repeats on the paper. Slide the drawing down the jar to continue. Alternately, fit a paper inside the jar, take it out and draw on it. Put it back in the jar and paint over the drawing.
ReplyDeleteHey i am looking for your seahorse pillow ebook. Can you please give it to me in mail??
