If Marie Antoinette had been a hedgehog...

I think she would have looked like this.

It's a free ruffle hedgehog sewing pattern! This is my way of saying thank you for all the wonderful comments and feedback and linking to that you guys have been giving me lately. It means so much to me. So I made this for you. I love you guys! (Uh oh, here comes the drunk sorority girl) You are all my B/F/Fs for life, hiccup, and your hhhhair is sooo shiny!

Ahem. Let's begin. Cut these out on the lines. Then sew the three pieces together. Leave a hole, turn it right side out, stuff it, stitch it shut.

Cut 3 inch wide strips of fabric like this. Four of them. These are the ruffles! You're going to gather them so that they end up half the length you start with.

This is how I do ruffles. Draw a line down the middle of the strip of fabric. Finger press one edge up to the line. Finger press the top edge down about 1/4 inch.

Fold over and pin.

Stitch right down the middle. Grab one thread and gently start gathering until the fabric strip is half the length you started with.

Hand stitch the ruffles on like this. C and D go all the way around. Makes some hedgehog eyes and a little nose. Finished! Yay!

So I made mine out of muslin, but I'm dying to see what it would look like if it were something else, like plaid. Or felt! Felt ruffles would be way easier. If you make this, email me a picture of your hedgehog! I'd love to see what you crafty creative peeps would do with it.

  6. You are very welcome, you guys. Thank you for listening to me babble about my cat.
The body of this hedgehog is so incredibly easy, and if you wanted to skip the ruffles, you could sew on some ruffled quilt binding or something or even leave it plain and use a cute print or something. Have fun with it!

  7. I love this. And the crack about Marie Antoinette makes it even more perfect. I don't sew much, but I'm going to give this a whirl, because I do like a spot of hand-sewing now and again, and this seems perfect.

    You rock.

    xoxo.

P.S. Mr Squirrel is still waiting to be sewn...as soon as Halloween costume making madness is over. ;)

  12. I am imaging this lovely little hedgie strolling the hall of mirrors at Versailles. I am sure she would have her own little hole or bush where she could pretend she is merely a brillo-brush hedgehog like all the rest.

And the pattern is ingenious, like so much you do.

  18. Its late, I've been snowed in with all my children all day, and I have a pic to send of a really cute hedgehog, but I can't find an email address for you anywhere. If she weren't other wise occupied with Hairy, I'd think Ms. Norwood was somehow involved...
