Electrified Fox Lamp Tutorial and Giveaway!
Ok, you guys. Here's the secret for turning stuffed animals into lamps!
It's Stiffy Fabric Stiffener from Plaid! (Picture me holding the bottle up next to my face and smiling maniacally). In a nutshell, you can brush Stiffy onto a plush animal, pull out the stuffing, and stick a string of LED lights inside. But I know that the crafter in you wants the full tutorial...so let's go! Oh, and there's a giveaway in this for you if you leave me a comment on this post before, let's say, next Monday the 18th. THREE lucky winners will be chosen at random to win a bottle of Stiffy!
(And many thanks and cheek kisses to Amy of ModgePodgeRocks for orchestrating this fabulous giveaway. The lady knows her way around a Stiffy. Oh, sorry Amy! You know I had to make at least one adolescent joke about the name!)
Ahem. Let's begin.
First, you need a stuffed animal. This fox pattern is available in my etsy shop, but you can use any animal you like as long as it's not made of fur, and you don't have to sew your own. I used the fox but modified the tail like this:
so that the light strand could go up the tail, too. I cut a curve into the side and then handstitched the tail on.
Next, I stuffed the fox and left the bottom open.
And now comes the fun part. You get to cover the whole creature with Stiffy! This stuff is so fun, I swear. You basically brush it on thick and let it dry. It turns the fabric into a hard shell. And it doesn't stink! Extra points for that!
Now you get to eviscerate your animal. After the Stiffy is totally dry, gently pull out all the stuffing. I used a pencil wrapped in duct tape to poke up into the far corners and grab the stuffing. Sort of spin the pencil around in there.
Like cotton candy!
Trim the bottom edge off so that the fox stands up straight. And cut a snip out for the light cord.
And stuff the light string inside and up the tail and into the head. Please use LED lights so you don't burn down your house.
And voila. You can really use any animal for this, and you don't have to sew your own. Just coat it with Stiffy, and then cut an inconspicuous hole in the back to remove the stuffing and insert the lights. I'm going to make an elephant next. Oh, and I also used Stiffy to make that apple garland in the background. Just laid out the fabric on a piece of foil, brushed on the Stiffy, let it dry, and then peeled it off the foil. The Stiffy keeps the fabric from unraveling!
Have fun with it, you guys, and leave me a comment to enter the giveaway!

What an awesome idea. I'll definitely have to try this!!
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic!! I'm imagine a full menagerie of animal lamps on a shelf... or even geometric shapes! Oh the possibilities are endless. Thanks for sharing your creative genius, Katie!
ReplyDeleteLove it, love it, love it! So genius!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, the possibilities....
Mwahahahahaha!
This is great! My mom has been looking for a way to make the lace angel her grandmother made for her christmas tree topper stiff again. The basement flooded, and we haven't been able to fix it since.
ReplyDeleteBRILLIANT!!!!
ReplyDeleteI take my hat off to you. Move over Martha!
Awesome! I have been on the lookout for a little lamp for my boys bedroom. It has to be bright enough for reading, but not so bright that it keeps the kiddos up....this is perfect! I really dig the fox pattern too :)
ReplyDeleteKatie, I've said this before and I'll say it again - you're downright brilliant.
ReplyDeleteAnd arrgh! I have to have Stiffy. And you picked a really nice stuffie to advertise Stiffy. Me, I would've picked a hideous old furry teddy bear, the sort with a Christmas suit on. The kind that even Goodwill rejects.
Oh.my.gah! This is fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for making at least one adolescent Stiffy joke. I was giggling already in the first paragraph and feeling like a miscreant.
ReplyDeleteOOoooo! I'm probably going to need a bottle of that.
ReplyDeleteOnly one adolescent joke about the name? I would have loved (and laughed at) a whole string of them! Anyhow, this is so cool that I'm delurking to say that I could really use a stiffy right now. Or a "stiff one"... either way.
ReplyDeleteThis is AWESOME! Talk about innovations and ideas for a completely custom nursery now, eh?
ReplyDeleteYou're a genius, Katie. Genius!
Ah, another genius tutorial. Thank you so much for constantly inspiring me.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win Stiffy, otherwise where I would buy it here in India. I moved here this summer for three years and am craving to begin make some crafts. This project would be a perfect one to begin.
Sonia
Love this idea :D
ReplyDeleteso cute and what a pretty little face! :D
thanks :D
The product opens new vistas! My mind is reeling. Just this week I was searching for something to artistically patch a hole in a door. Ended up using wallpaper samples. With the Stiffy I can now print anything I want onto fabric! OMG!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! I am slowly gathering ideas to create an enchanted bedroom for my six month old daughter, and this would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteI need some of this stuff. I think I'd like to make a fabric mobile.
ReplyDeleteWow... I had no idea this product even existed. What a great idea and a great way to use all my LED lights!
ReplyDelete:)
Brilliant! I'll never look at a stuffed animal the same way again. :-)
ReplyDeleteOk, I thought the fox alone was cool, but this is fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteYou are brilliant! I am seeing all the possibilities of Stiffy in my high school sculpture class....(but I should probably remove the label before I let them have it!)
ReplyDeleteI have never seen anything like that! Love it!
ReplyDeleteIs that ever NEAT! Great gift idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! Now I'm thinking about making one for my sister - I know she would love it!
ReplyDeletevery cool! I would love to try this!!
ReplyDeleteI have never even HEARD of stiffy! I am so excited to learn something new! Thanks for the giveaway too:)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! That is so cute! I have all kinds of ideas running through my head now. Hope I win the Stiffy so I can try them out. :)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the fox! So cute! :-) Thanks for the giveaway, t

ReplyDeleteOH. Wow! This is neat!!
ReplyDeleteThat Stiffy stuff is cool :)
Loves it, such a good idea! Im going to try out the garland, but make it 3-d too!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I have never heard of this stiffy stuff but I am in love with the idea! There are so many things one could do... And I love, love, love that fox!
ReplyDeleteThis project reminds me of when I used to harden jeans with varnish so they could stand on their own stuffing the jeans with plastic bags till the varnish dried. Then putting a plant pot in the top of jeans. This was done long ago but I bet this would be great with out the smell and mess. Very cool the lamp!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute, I'm going to make an owl lamp using this technique.
ReplyDeleteStiffy sounds neat-o!
That's a great idea! Can't wait to try it out! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDelete-Arathi(arathi.prakash@gmail.com)

ReplyDeletehow in the world have I never heard of this stuff??? I am totally doing this. And then probably about a billion other things, too. Thanks for turning me on to yet another crafty addiction!

ReplyDeleterossane
GENIUS! How cute is that fox too!?! I think I need a bottle of this magical stuff. Is a string of LED lights different than Christmas lights? LED's don't get hot!? Who knew!
ReplyDeleteI love the way I learn new things everyday. Mod Podge Rocks directed me here with her "Stiffy" comment. I had to see what it was about and am so glad to have found another brilliant blog to follow :D
ReplyDeleteKeep Smilin'
This is amazing! I just found a $50.oo owl lamp on line and was trying to figure out how to remake it my own way! I even have all the pieces to a paper ikea lamp that my cat shredded! Think this product is strong enough to make a hanging lamp? Does it have a problem with heat?
ReplyDeletePisces3283@comcast.net
SO sweet. It's got the wheels in my brain turning! Never heard of Stiffy before. Sounds completely awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute idea!
ReplyDeleteCute project! I've never heard of Stiffy before, but I'd sure like to have one (a bottle that is)!
ReplyDeleteI love this! My mom made a set of kitties that were similar to the fox. They were supposed to be used for a checkers set (they're only about four inches tall), but the set was never finished, nor the board. She passed away in November, and I can't bring myself to finish them. I think this is a perfect way to use them!! Being as small as they are, I'm thinking of doing a whole line of them and putting them on the mantle. Thank you!! <3
ReplyDeleteYou really are a craft genious! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat was FANTASTIC! You are so smart!!
ReplyDeleteI cant wait to try your idea! Thanks for sharing.
Amazing, what a perfect way to finish off a nursery, matching things the way you'd like them not having to buy them.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this great idea.
Hats off for a totally new idea. Love the fox as is, but adding a light is so neat. Would be a lovely soft light for a baby's room. Or any room.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great product. I hope I can get it here in Australia. And I commend you on your restraint Katie...just one adult comment about stiffy... I have giggled over a few lol :) Thanks for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely fantastic!!! I am completely in love with this fox lamp!
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool product. I have seen it at the craft store but have never tried it. This would be cool to do. Grandson's room is Shrek. I could do this to one of the shrek dolls!!!!!! Ideas are forming. Thanks for the chance to win a bottle of stiffy to try.
