I'm afraid to tell you this

Last night I bought a bunch of felt because I'm going to make 6 new Christmas stockings. I realized that Maggie needs her first stocking and I don't really like our old ones and there's only a week until Christmas and, yes, ok, I'll admit that I looked at Target for stockings and couldn't find ones I liked and so there I was at Joann last night buying felt, standing in line for about 30 minutes (even though there was only one person ahead of me in line...thank god I'm not on Project Runway...can you imagine if the employees at Mood functioned at that speed and can you hear Tim Gunn saying "Designers, you have 30 minutes at Joann to get your fabric?" like forget it!). Where was I? Oh yeah, I'm afraid to even tell you about this stocking undertaking because I fear that they might look like crap and you may expect pictures so maybe I should have kept this whole thing a secret.

  1. As someone who has recently made several felt stockings (a first for me), let me reassure you that they are incredibly easy. I found that (like most design) the simpler the better so as to render a handmade not homemade effect. Best of luck and enjoy the process! Peace!

  2. Thanks, Karen. It actually is going better than I thought it might. I've cut out 3 so far and am feeling pretty good. God bless felt.

  3. lol... I found myself at the fabric store yesterday with an over tired 14 month old....for the very same reasons...I saw some cute boiled wool stockings at Chapters, but was far to cheap to spend $20 each on them...
I couldn't find any wool felt (or wool in any colour other thank grey) at the fabric store, so I went with a cheerful green corduroy.

can't wait to see some pics (should you decide to share!)

  4. Green corduroy sounds so cute! Mine aren't even wool felt. Just the cheapy stuff. They'll probably melt above the fireplace.

  5. Last year I got as far as designing the pattern, this year I managed to make them! and 4 extra ones for friends, they went together quite quickly once I started... good luck xxx

  6. 30 mins to get your fabric, with three small children in tow just before lunchtime, and no snacks or distracting toys, and the slowest cutting staff in the world manning the table, and hand-held scanning devices that are powered by Microsoft (alpha version) on dial-up and oh, yes, they're cutting with kids' safety scissors (plastic blades) because that's who's sponsoring this episode of Project Runway.

Ah yes, what my nightmares are made of.

All that said, I bet your stockings are going to be super!

  7. Ah hahahaha. And the person in front of you in line at the cutting table has no idea how much fabric they need and so they have to ask the employee who stops cutting to discuss how much to cut and then someone jumps ahead of you in line and says they special ordered some fabric so the employee just walks away to find it and then she finally comes back but the phone rings and the employee answers it and starts giving driving directions aaaaaahhhhhh.

Good thing the project runway challenge on this episode is to make a garment out of calico and dora the explorer fleece.

  10. well, I got mine together, but not decorated. and I didn't even use the stuff I bought (naturally) I made 2, that were SO bad, I had to use a already made sock as a template...things went MUCH better after that!
