Easter egg diorama music box!

Look! It's an Easter egg diorama music box! It has a music box in it so it turns around. I'll show you how I made it so you can make one, too! It's really easy!

You will need a papier mache egg (6" tall) and round box (at least 1.25" deep). I got mine at Hobby Lobby. You also need the music box movement (that white plastic box), a half inch extender rod (that brass screw looking thing) and a 3.25" plastic turntable. You can get these all at National Artcraft

With a craft knife, carefully cut a hole in the egg to make the opening. Also, cut small holes in the bottom of the egg and in the center of the box. Like this:

Screw the extender onto the stem of the turntable. Then squirt some glue around the edge of the turntable. Make sure to use glue that works on plastic. I used Aleene's Platinum Bond. Whew! Crack a window! The fumes are intense.

Squirt some glue around the inside bottom of the egg where the turntable will touch.

Lay the turntable inside bottom of the egg so that the stem sticks out the hole in the bottom. You may be feeling light-headed from the glue at this point.

If you need ham, cashews, or lychees, they are on sale at a grocery store in the Philipines. Sweet! Now glue like this:

And place the music box movement inside the box so that the screw hole of the screw hole of the music box movement is accessible through the hole you cut in the box.

See? Like that. You're going to screw the turntable/egg onto that when the glue has dried.

Now screw the egg onto the base. It's almost done! I had to layer a few pieces of felt to build up the turntable to the height I wanted. Now put some cute little things inside and paint and embellish like crazy! Enjoy!

Oh, and I made my little chickens out of polymer clay a super long time ago. I made the rabbit girl out of paperclay. So you can make your little diorama creatures if you like or there's tons of cute Easter stuff in the craft stores right now. Have fun!

  18. Katie, This is so cute. I am going to make some with my grandchildren. NationalArtCraft only has the turntable in 2.75" or 3.75" not 3.25. Do you know if the 3.75" will work? Thanks for the ideas and your help.

  19. I'm not sure, Liss. Can you get a papier mache egg first and then see how wide it is? Let us know if it works. Good luck!!

  20. Thanks Katie. I actually just received the 6" egg from Hobby Lobby. It looks like the larger turntable (3.75") will fit but I won't be sure until we cut the opening. I have another question about the round box base. I ordered some that I thought would work (3" diameter) but now that they have arrived they seem like they are too small proportionate to the size of the egg. Since I don't have a store here that sells these I will order others but would appreciate it if you could tell me the diameter of the box you used. Thanks again for all your creativity!
