Grey skies are gonna clear up!

Many times I have thought, "Hmmm,  I wonder if you can change the fabric on an umbrella." I bet you've been wondering the same thing, too! Well, when I heard from the ladies of Crafty Planet and their call for submissions for their new One Yard Wonders book, I decided to try out the umbrella idea. I used a yard of this Sandi Henderson chain flower fabric because I had it on hand, but I'm going to order some laminated cotton to make another that is actually waterproof. I also figured I could spray this one with tent waterproofing spray from the sporting goods store. So fun!

I bet you have dingy old umbrellas lying around that you could try this on. It was amazingly simple. I just used one of the triangles of old umbrella fabric as a pattern and looked at the old umbrella to see where the nylon was stitched on. It turns out those metal ball tips have little holes in them so you can stitch through them. And the top of the umbrella screws right off. I changed that top piece for a little wooden ball to make it cuter.
So I'm emailing the submission in today, and perhaps I'll do a full blown tutorial here! Have you guys submitted anything? The deadline is tomorrow! Hurry!

  3. Oh, that is just gorgeous. Pity we are still in a drought here (southern Australia), so not much use for umbrellas. I don't think we even have one in the house!

I found your blog through modge podge rocks blog roll - and I lurve it, especially the gel transfer on wood project.
