Chickens

Oh no! Sascha said in the comments that chickens are a pain in the ass. Dang. I really was getting into the idea. Are they smelly? I am sooo into the Little House books right now. I just realized today that the house where Laura was born was about 50 miles from where I live right now! I have to take a road trip.

In the meantime, I made a personalized spiderweb with dimensional paint. The tutorial should be up over at ohdeedoh sometime Friday.

Also, I just got the greenlight from my editor to do a nursery tour of Maggie's room in mid-November. Cool! I'm really excited. Guess I need to go finish it now.

  1. We are SO into those books right now, too. I can't believe that I didn't read them before now! We're almost done with Little House on the Prairie, and all of us are loving it. I would LOVE to see her house, but it is 1,671 miles from my house, so... please take pictures!!!

  2. Just finished the whole series (again) a few days ago. Sigh. Is it wrong that I want to make a special trip to the Laura Ingalls museum in Missouri?

  3. I wish the house was still there. Unfortunately, there's just a reproduction log house and (this is the awful part) the big woods have been cleared for farm land. I still want to check out the museum there. And there's one in Missouri, too? Eeeee!
Now that I know how cold it is up here, I cannot believe people lived here before central heat. How did they do it??? Hardy folk for sure.

  4. They do stink. Chickens, not the books. Well actually just the poop.

  5. Chickens aren't bad! Our yard is pretty big and they are in the back corner but I only smell them if I go back into their coop when I haven't cleaned for a few days. I put straw at the bottom of the coop and change that out weekly and compost the used straw. Minimal odor (we have 5 hens). I say get some if it's allowed in your area!

my parents have a whack of chickens and love them! they can get smelly I guess, but if you change their bedding regularly then they are fine!

  8. We love our chickens.

IF you have them in a very small space and don't clean often, they they will stink.

We have a big coop, free range them in the day, and clean the coop out every two or three weeks. The smell really isn't noticeable.

My 13 year old carries them around and cuddles them. It's so funny when she talks to them and they "talk" back! She says it's like hugging a feather pillow. Ours are really soft feathered, and nice to pet.

They are really great for getting rid of bugs, providing awesome compost, and worth a laugh a day.

I think chickens are just something some folks really like and some folks don't. (Sort of like cat people and dog people - you also have chicken people)

PS - I used to day-dream about the Laura Engalls series as a kid, and just reread all of them a couple of years ago. Now I live in the country and love it!

  9. Forgot to mention we have 24 chickens - but most folks should probably only three or four to start out with. Just don't get one - they will die of loneliness without friends to flock with.

    The eggs taste better too!

  10. We have 3 chickens and for the most part they're great. I'm pregnant, so I really love knowing that the eggs I'm eating are hormone and antibiotic free. They are super easy to take care of. Just check on the food and water twice a day, check for eggs, rake the poop every now and then. Our biggest stress from them is when they get loud. bluck bluck bluck bluck BLOOOOCK!bluck bluck bluck BLOOOCK! When they do that we go out and whistle to them. Just hold a high note. They get interested and shut up. =)

  11. Get bantam hens! They are adorable little chickens, wonderful pets. We have 4 that free range in our medium sized yard. They are delightful.
